Food forest design , consulting and implementation
Unfortunately, this course will not take place this spring. We are looking into the possibility of organizing a new course this fall.
Food forest design course at Permaculture project 't Vliegherkeshof ~ Aalter (O-vl)
6 consecutive Thursdays
24/4 ~1/5 ~ 8/5 ~15/5 ~ 22/5 ~ 29/5
Teacher: Josse Horsten
In this course you will be provided with a proven and accessible design method that will enable you to shape your future food forest.
input
The course offers a dynamic alternation between practice and theory.
Each day of classes we start with a strong theoretical framework in which we explain the different design steps of a food forest. We are inspired by permaculture design, syntropic agriculture and agroecology to create a broad and applicable food forest framework.
You immediately put what you learn into practice.
During the course days you will actively participate in the food forest design of our guest location, so that you can directly experience the theory on site.
In between the lessons , you will work on your own food forest design at home, equipped with new knowledge, tools and insights. This way, at the end of the course, you will have a concrete plan for your future food forest.
And as a bonus! we visit 2 inspiring food forests near the host location. This time we visit Eetbos Deinze and VLOET permafruit! Visiting an existing project broadens your view and provides inspiration!

During six days we will take you step by step through the process from initial observation to drawing up a planting plan. Josse will guide this process, while our hosts will make their terrain available as a lively classroom.
Your personal design will be fully tailored to your specific context, wishes and needs.
Our method is simple and hands-on, so that everyone can get started with it. We work with pen and paper and simple tools. Drawing talent is not required, just the willingness to work together!
This course is primarily intended for people with a basic knowledge of one or more of the following domains: permaculture, organic farming, food forests and/or ecological gardening. The focus is on the design process and methodology, and there is room for feedback on your personal design trajectory.
If you don't have basic knowledge yet but feel the call, reach out to discuss whether this course is for you.

The Vliegherkeshof, located in Aalter (between Ghent and Bruges), is a young permaculture project that focuses on restoring and increasing biodiversity. From this sustainable and robust system we want to produce perennial plants with different functions and local food. We do this with respect for and in connection with nature. In this way we want to leave something positive for the future and be a place of inspiration for others.
Would you like to help us think about how a former cornfield can be transformed into a sustainable place?
